Belize licenses nurses through the Nurses and Midwives Council with the regional RENR. Doctors register with the Medical and Dental Council, which may examine foreign graduates.
Belize in brief. Belize is a small English-speaking country in Central America and a CARICOM member. Nurses register with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize and use the Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR), a CXC-managed MCQ exam. Doctors register with the Belize Medical and Dental Council, which may examine foreign graduates, unverified. Our data lists four offshore medical schools in Belize, for example Central America Health Sciences University, whose students mostly sit USMLE. Other professions register by qualification.
Belize has no large national medical school. The University of Belize trains nurses and allied health staff, and the country has historically relied on doctors trained in Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica, Guatemala and other countries, many on government or scholarship programmes. Four private offshore medical schools operate in the country, according to our data. The best known is Central America Health Sciences University in Belmopan, and its students typically plan for the United States.
Instruction is in English, with Belizean Kriol, Spanish and Garifuna spoken in clinics. For nurses the Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize regulates the profession, and registration depends on qualification and the regional exam.
Graduation and licensing connect through the councils. A graduate of a Cuban or Mexican school who returns to Belize meets the Belize Medical and Dental Council, which decides what documentation and, perhaps, assessment it requires. An offshore graduate headed for the US does not meet the Belizean council at all.
Belize's unusual position matters for exam preparation. English is official, but a large part of the population speaks Spanish at home, and many Belizean health workers trained in Spanish-language programmes. A doctor from Cuba or Mexico has to translate their knowledge into English clinical vocabulary, for patient records and for any council assessment. Nurses sitting the RENR do so in English.
The country is also near the US and Mexico, which creates mobility. Belizean nurses often consider NCLEX-RN for the US, and doctors consider ECFMG and USMLE, so a page like this is often one stop in a longer plan.

The RENR comprises two papers of 100 to 120 multiple-choice items, about 200 questions in total, each paper 2 hours 30 minutes, with sittings in April and October. It is managed with the Caribbean Examinations Council. According to the blueprint in our data, nursing practice carries 30%, clinical decision-making 20%, leadership and management 15%, professional conduct 10%, health promotion 10%, communication 10% and professional development 5%. Our source recommends confirming participation with the national council, and we have done the same: ask the Nurses and Midwives Council whether the RENR applies to your category.
The Belize Medical and Dental Council registers doctors and dentists. Our data refers to a council exam for foreign graduates but could not verify it. Foreign graduates should ask whether the Council recognises their school, what supervised period it expects and whether any written or oral assessment applies.
For the offshore students in Belize, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK are the exams that decide their careers. The important checks are the school's ECFMG eligibility, its pass-rate record and the clinical rotation sites.

Midwives register with the Nurses and Midwives Council. Pharmacists, dentists and physiotherapists register through the Ministry of Health and professional bodies. Our research found no confirmed exam, and the entries are unverified. As elsewhere in the region, assume document verification and possible local assessment for foreign graduates.
Preparation for any regional or council assessment should reflect local practice. In Belize that means a heavy burden of diabetes, hypertension, injury, dengue and other vector-borne disease, HIV, tuberculosis, maternal health in rural districts, and diseases that follow migration across the Guatemalan and Mexican borders. Nursing questions test priority-setting in busy wards where staffing is thin, so practise "who do you see first" scenarios.
Start with the paperwork, because it takes longer than studying. Order certified transcripts and degree verification from your school, gather good-standing letters from any previous regulator, and have identity documents certified. Ask each council for a written checklist. A realistic timeline from first email to registration is several months, and longer if the council meets only periodically to approve applications.
Belize's closeness to the United States and Mexico means that many clinicians weigh a second licence early. Nurses who want US registration sit NCLEX-RN, and doctors need ECFMG certification and USMLE. The RENR and the Belizean registration are useful domestic and regional credentials, but they are not accepted as substitutes. Decide your destination before you spend on preparation, so you choose the exam that matters.

English is the official language and the exam language. CARICOM membership and CAAM-HP accreditation help recognition between Caribbean states, though Belize's Central American location means many professionals also look north. Check each target regulator before assuming that a Belizean licence will be honoured. For foreign graduates coming to Belize, the council's recognition list is the first document to ask for.
