Egypt is extending licensing exams one profession at a time. Here is where doctors, pharmacists and others stand, and what to confirm.
The licensing exam for each profession, from our regulator research. Open one to see what it covers.
Egypt in brief. Doctors sit the Egyptian Medical Licensing Exam (EMLE), a computer-based test set under Law 153 of 2019 and held twice a year, in February and September. Pharmacists have a Pharmacy Practice Licensing Exam run through the Egyptian Health Council (EHC), first applied to the 2024 graduating cohort. Nursing and dental practice exams are reported but not confirmed on the pages we opened, so check the EHC before you plan around them. Midwives and physiotherapists register by qualification. Foreign nationals practise only on a reciprocity basis.
Egypt trains more doctors than almost any country in the region. The MBBCh takes six years and is followed by a compulsory one-year internship (house officer year) in teaching or Ministry of Health hospitals. There are well over 30 faculties of medicine, public and private, including Cairo, Ain Shams, Alexandria and Mansoura. Public schools teach largely in English with Arabic support, and some private and international programmes teach fully in English. Nursing is a four-year bachelor's degree, pharmacy five years (PharmD), and dentistry five years plus an internship.
Universities are overseen by the Supreme Council of Universities, and programme quality by NAQAAE. After the internship, doctors register with the Egyptian Medical Syndicate and the Ministry of Health and Population, which grant the right to practise. Postgraduate study runs through master's degrees and the Egyptian Fellowship. Confirm current syndicate steps.
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Medical degree | MBBCh, 6 years |
| Internship | 1 year house officer year, compulsory |
| Language of instruction | English and Arabic |
| Schools and accreditation | 30+ faculties; Supreme Council of Universities and NAQAAE |
| Route to licence | Degree, internship, Medical Syndicate and MoHP registration |
Most countries in the region either test everyone or test no one. Egypt is mid-transition. A single licensing exam for doctors is already running. Pharmacy followed. Other professions are being brought under the same Egyptian Health Council framework one at a time, and the dates move. That makes the country harder to plan for than the tidy official summaries suggest.
If you are a graduate, the practical question is not "is there an exam?" but "has my profession and my graduating year been brought under it yet?" Ask your faculty and your syndicate before you assume either answer.
Egyptian graduates of Egyptian faculties. Doctors must pass the EMLE after the compulsory internship. Pharmacists graduating from the 2024 cohort onward sit the EHC pharmacy practice exam after a six-month internship. For nurses and dentists, the EHC has been described as rolling out practice exams, but we could not confirm the current rules on an official page.
Egyptians with foreign degrees. The degree first has to be recognised through the Supreme Council of Universities (equivalency). Only then do you join the same registration path as local graduates, which for doctors includes the EMLE.
Non-Egyptian nationals. Practice is open only by reciprocity with your country of origin, plus registration with the relevant syndicate. The Invest in Egypt licensing guide lists the governing laws by profession. Treat this as a legal and administrative route, not an exam route.

Regulator. The Ministry of Health and Population, with the Compulsory Training Authority for Physicians supervising, under Law 153 of 2019. A committee of ministry consultants and university professors sets the standards.
Format. A computer-based multiple-choice exam taken online. Candidates log in with a username and password and the identity check uses face or fingerprint identification. It is held twice a year, in February and September. We did not find a published question count or pass mark on the pages we opened, so do not rely on figures quoted in forums.
Language. The instruction language was not stated on the pages we reviewed. Egyptian medical schools teach mainly in English, which is why most candidates prepare in English, but confirm on your exam notice.
Typical steps.
The Egyptian Health Council runs this exam for pharmacy graduates from the May 2024 cohort, after a six-month internship. University announcements listed sittings in May 2025, September 2025 and January 2026 for 2024 graduates. Format and pass mark were not shown on the pages we opened. Foreign pharmacists are admitted by reciprocity under Law 127 of 1955.
Earlier graduates should not assume the exam applies to them. Check with the Egyptian Pharmacists Syndicate which rules cover your graduating year.
Both professions are described as moving under EHC practice licensing exams. We could not find a current official notice giving format, language or cut-off dates. Until you have one from the Egyptian Health Council or your syndicate, treat any detail you read elsewhere as provisional. Dental graduates and foreign dentists are governed by Law 537 of 1954 on the reciprocity side.
Midwives register through the Ministry of Health and Population, usually after nursing-route or technical institute training. Physiotherapists register under Law 3 of 1985 with the Ministry register and the Egyptian Physiotherapy Syndicate, and non-Egyptians again by reciprocity. There is no MCQ licensing exam for either group on the sources we could verify. The EHC exam framework may be extended to physiotherapy, so recheck each year.

There is no Gulf-style Dataflow or Prometric step for working inside Egypt. Recognition runs through the Supreme Council of Universities for degrees and the syndicates for registration. The reverse direction matters just as much: a large share of Egyptian graduates later apply to the Gulf, the UK or elsewhere, where they sit those countries' exams. An EMLE pass is a domestic licence and does not replace PLAB, Gulf licensing exams or similar.
For a plan that covers both steps, start with the Egyptian requirement, then add the destination exam. Our guides on those exams are linked from the exam cards above.

Law 153 of 2019 created the framework for licensing exams and the Compulsory Training Authority for Physicians. Since then, the Egyptian Health Council has been the vehicle for extending practice exams to other professions. The consequence is a patchwork. A doctor who graduated in 2018 and a pharmacist who graduated in 2024 are under different regimes, and a nurse may be somewhere in between.
Three practical habits help. First, keep the date of your graduation and internship completion in your records, because eligibility often turns on cohort. Second, save every official announcement as a PDF. University news pages, such as those from Ain Shams or Assiut, have carried some of the earliest notices about new exams, and pages get moved. Third, ask whether a transitional arrangement exists for earlier graduates before assuming you are exempt or caught.
The EMLE is delivered online with identity checks by face or fingerprint. That format has consequences beyond content knowledge. Test your device and connection well before the sitting. Learn the interface: flagging, navigating between questions and the time display. Practise long blocks on a screen, not on paper, because reading hundreds of clinical stems on a monitor is tiring in a different way.
Content-wise, Egyptian medical graduates prepare across the full curriculum, with weight on internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics, as in most national licensing models. We do not state official domain weights because we have not seen a published blueprint. Ask your faculty or the Compulsory Training Authority for the current one.
The EMLE is the Egyptian licence. Many graduates then pursue the UK (PLAB), the Gulf (Dataflow and the local licensing exam) or Australia and North America. Each requires its own preparation. An Egyptian pass does not give any of them exemption, though your Egyptian internship records and syndicate good-standing letter will be needed for verification. Plan the documents at the same time as the exam.
Yes. The Egyptian Medical Licensing Exam (EMLE) is an online, computer-based test set under Law 153 of 2019 and held in February and September, taken after the compulsory internship.
Graduates from the May 2024 cohort onward sit the Pharmacy Practice Licensing Exam run through the Egyptian Health Council after a six-month internship. Earlier graduates should check which rules cover them.
Practice exams for both are reported as being rolled out by the Egyptian Health Council, but we could not confirm current rules. Ask the council or your syndicate for the official notice.
Only by reciprocity with the home country and registration with the syndicate, so this is an administrative and legal route rather than an exam route.
No. It is a domestic licence. Those destinations have their own exams and primary-source verification.
Egyptians with a foreign degree need equivalency from the Supreme Council of Universities before joining the registration path.
