Key facts. We could not verify a national MCQ licensing exam for any health profession in Myanmar. Local graduates appear to register through their council by qualification: the Myanmar Medical Council for doctors, the Myanmar Nurse and Midwife Council for nurses and midwives, and the Myanmar Dental Council for dentists. Foreign-graduate doctors are reported to face a registration exam, but its format is unknown. Medical education is taught largely in English, with Burmese used in practice. Since 2021 the conflict has disrupted examinations and registration, and we could not confirm any official council website. Treat everything on this page as a map of what to ask, not a set of confirmed rules.
Medical and health education in Myanmar
Myanmar's medical schools are run by the Ministry of Health, not the Ministry of Education. A handful of universities of medicine, including those in Yangon, Mandalay and Magway, award the MBBS after about five years of study followed by a year of house-surgeoncy, the supervised internship. Nursing, dentistry and pharmacy are taught at separate universities and institutes. Teaching mixes Burmese and English, and textbooks are largely in English.
The Myanmar Medical Council registers doctors, and for locally trained graduates registration follows qualification and the internship year. Other professions have their own councils. Since 2021 political turmoil has disrupted teaching, placements and administration, so programme timelines and records may be unreliable. We could not verify a published national licensing exam, which is why this page is shorter on exam detail. Confirm current requirements with the Council, in writing where possible, and keep copies of your transcript and internship record in case an overseas regulator asks for them.
No exam listed for this selection yet. We add exams only once we can verify them with the regulator.
Why this page is shorter on exam detail than other countries
Most pages in this section describe a named exam, its format and its calendar. For Myanmar we have not been able to do that honestly. After searching for regulator pages, we found no council website we could verify, and no published blueprint for a national licensing test in any of the six professions we cover. Rather than invent one, we are saying so.
That is itself useful. Many candidates search for "Myanmar medical licensing exam" and end up on sites that present a confident exam name and fee. Be careful with those. In particular, the domain myanmarmedicalcouncil.org is not an official site, according to our research, and should not be used for fees or applications. If a page asks for payment before you have confirmed it belongs to a council or the Ministry of Health, stop.
How the system is structured
Myanmar has statutory councils for several professions. The Myanmar Medical Council registers doctors. The Myanmar Nurse and Midwife Council covers nurses and midwives under one body. The Myanmar Dental Council registers dentists. Pharmacy and physiotherapy are different: we did not identify a statutory pharmacy council, so the Ministry of Health appears to be the responsible authority, and physiotherapy is also under the Ministry.
The common thread is registration by qualification. Graduates of government universities of medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy are generally registered on the basis of the degree and the completion of required training, with no separate national MCQ exam. This is the pattern we report as "verify" for most professions, because it comes from secondary summaries, not from a council page.
Who needs a licensing exam in Myanmar
- Locally trained doctors: registration by qualification; no licensing exam identified.
- Foreign-graduate doctors: a registration exam is reported by the Medical Council. Format, language and frequency are unknown.
- Nurses and midwives: graduates of government nursing universities register through the council. No exam confirmed.
- Dentists: registration through the Dental Council; no exam confirmed.
- Pharmacists and physiotherapists: Ministry of Health registration; no exam confirmed.
Since 2021 the political situation has disrupted examinations, graduation timetables and registration. Rules and office availability can change without notice. Always check the current status with your university or an official representative before relying on any date.
Doctors
For doctors, the regulator is the Myanmar Medical Council. Graduates of local medical universities register by qualification. The foreign-graduate route is where an exam is mentioned. If you studied abroad, ask the Council, in writing, for four things: whether an exam applies to your degree, the format and language, the sitting dates, and the evidence they need from your school.
Keep copies of your transcript, internship record and any certificate of good standing from the country where you trained. Overseas regulators ask for the same documents, so the effort is not wasted.

Nurses and midwives
The Myanmar Nurse and Midwife Council registers both professions. Our research found no licensing exam for nurses or midwives who graduate from government nursing universities. The scale of the workforce matters, however. A large number of Myanmar nurses look abroad, and our notes record that many sit the Singapore Nursing Board exam or other overseas exams. For these candidates, the exam that shapes their preparation is not a Myanmar exam at all, it is the destination country's.
Dentists, pharmacists and physiotherapists
The Myanmar Dental Council registers dentists. Pharmacists and physiotherapists appear to register through the Ministry of Health, with no statutory council identified. In each case the registration rule we found is by qualification, flagged for verification. If you are preparing for an exam, you are likely preparing for an overseas one.

Language and recognition
Medical education in Myanmar is taught largely in English, which helps graduates who later sit overseas exams. Burmese is used in clinical practice and administration. Myanmar is a member of ASEAN, and the ASEAN mutual recognition arrangements for nursing, medicine and dentistry exist on paper. They do not give a Myanmar graduate automatic registration elsewhere in the region, and each receiving country applies its own requirements.
Questions to put to a council or ministry
When you write to a council or to the Ministry of Health, ask precise questions and keep the replies. Which qualifications are recognised for my profession? Is there a registration exam, and if so what is the format, language and fee? How often is it held, and are sittings currently running? What documents must be certified, and by whom? Is a period of supervised practice required before full registration? Is a certificate of good standing available, and how long does it take? The answers matter more than any summary on a third-party website, including this one.
What to do now
- Decide where you want to practise. For most Myanmar graduates today, that decides which exam you need.
- Collect your documents. Degree, transcript, internship record, registration certificate and a good-standing letter if you can obtain one.
- Verify through official channels. Use your university, the Ministry of Health or a diplomatic mission, and avoid unofficial sites.
- Choose the destination exam and start practising.
