Guyana combines national council registration and the RENR for nurses with an offshore medical school market that prepares for USMLE.
Guyana in brief. Guyana has two medical worlds side by side: the University of Guyana, which trains doctors for the national health system, and offshore schools in and around Georgetown whose students aim for the United States and sit USMLE. For local registration, the Guyana Medical Council handles doctors, with a council exam for foreign graduates that we could not verify. Nurses register with the Guyana Nursing Council and use the Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR), a CXC-managed regional exam. English is the official language.
The University of Guyana's Faculty of Health Sciences trains doctors on an MBBS programme, nurses, pharmacists and allied health staff. Clinical training is mostly in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Guyana also hosts a small group of private offshore medical schools, including the American International School of Medicine and Georgetown American University, which recruit largely from North America and the Caribbean diaspora.
Teaching is in English. The Ministry of Health has also relied on doctors trained in Cuba, and the country has a long record of sending students to Cuban medical schools on scholarships. Nursing is taught at the University of Guyana and at the nursing school in Georgetown, with community-focused training for regional hospitals in the interior.
For a local graduate, the connection from graduation to registration is straightforward: complete the internship and apply to the Guyana Medical Council. For an offshore student, graduation connects mostly to the US system. Their path is ECFMG certification, USMLE Steps and the US residency match, and registration in Guyana is secondary.
Because the page serves two audiences, it helps to separate them.
If you are an offshore student, our United States page is the right starting point for the exam sequence, eligibility rules and fees. Check that your school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with the sponsor note ECFMG requires, since eligibility depends on it.

The Regional Examination for Nurse Registration is managed with the Caribbean Examinations Council. It consists of two papers of 100 to 120 multiple-choice items, about 200 in total, with 2 hours 30 minutes per paper, and is offered in April and October. The blueprint gives the biggest weights to nursing practice (30%) and clinical decision-making (20%), then leadership and management (15%), with professional conduct, health promotion and communication at 10% each, and professional development at 5%.
The Guyana Medical Council keeps the register. Our data mentions an exam for foreign graduates but does not describe it, so treat it as unverified. A Cuban-trained or other foreign-trained doctor who wishes to return to Guyana should ask the council whether recognition is by list or by assessment, and whether the Ministry of Health expects an internship period before posting.
These professions register through the Ministry of Health and their respective bodies. Our research found no confirmed exam. The default assumption should be credential verification plus a local check for foreign graduates, to be confirmed by the registrar.
If you are one of the offshore students, your schedule is set by the basic science curriculum and the USMLE dates, not by Guyana. A common pattern is to finish the pre-clinical years, take a dedicated study period of six to ten weeks, sit USMLE Step 1 (now pass or fail), and move to clinical rotations, many of them in the United States, before Step 2 CK.
Our own questions cover systems-based content in the style of the US exams, with explanations that teach the reasoning, not just the answer.
Guyana is geographically in South America and politically in CARICOM, which makes recognition questions common. A Guyanese nurse who passes the RENR can use that result as evidence in other participating territories, while a doctor moving to Trinidad and Tobago or Barbados deals with that territory's medical board. Ask each council for its list of recognised schools, and keep certified copies of your degree and good-standing letters from the Guyana Medical Council.
| Group | Body | Exam | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nurses | Guyana Nursing Council | RENR, two MCQ papers | April and October |
| Doctors, local | Guyana Medical Council | Registration after internship | No MCQ confirmed |
| Doctors, foreign graduates | Guyana Medical Council | Council exam (unverified) | Ask the council |
| Offshore students | ECFMG and NBME | USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK | US route |
| Other professions | Ministry of Health | Registration by qualification | No exam confirmed |
English is the official language, with Guyanese Creole spoken in everyday conversation and Indigenous languages in the interior. Exams are in English. Recognition of Guyanese qualifications elsewhere in CARICOM is helped by regional accreditation and the shared nursing exam, though each territory still registers separately. For the United States, ECFMG certification and USMLE are the gateway for international medical graduates, and NCLEX-RN is the gateway for nurses.
