UMDPC Pre-internship / Pre-entry
Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC)
MCQ + clinical (unknown detail)
UG
Uganda tests its own nursing students at very large scale but assesses foreign-trained nurses by interview. This page covers each profession's route.
Uganda: key facts
Uganda trains doctors through a five-year MBChB at around a dozen universities, including Makerere, Mbarara, Gulu and several private institutions, taught in English. The National Council for Higher Education accredits universities, and the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) approves clinical training. Nursing and midwifery are taught from certificate to degree level, and a distinctive feature is that the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB) sets the national exams for certificate and diploma students, so large cohorts sit a single national paper.
After the MBChB, doctors complete a 12-month internship at an approved hospital before full registration with the UMDPC. Nurses and midwives register with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council after their examinations. Pharmacists register after an internship. The council pages we could confirm are limited and internship arrangements have been disputed in recent years, so verify programme length and placement rules directly with the relevant council before you plan.
Two features make Uganda different from its neighbours. First, the nursing and midwifery examinations are very large. Press coverage reports that around 53,000 candidates sit a single UNMEB sitting, which makes it one of the biggest health examination events in East Africa. Second, the route for foreign-trained nurses is not a written exam at all. It is a committee interview, followed by a supervised attachment.
Doctors face a more conventional picture: examinations tied to internship and a competency assessment for those trained abroad, though the Council's own pages were not confirmed in our review.
| Profession | Local graduates | Foreign-trained |
|---|---|---|
| Nurses | UNMEB final qualifying examinations (written plus practical) | UNMC committee interview, then supervised attachment |
| Midwives | UNMEB final qualifying examinations (midwifery) | UNMC interview, then attachment |
| Doctors | Pre-internship or pre-entry examination (reported) | Competency examination (reported) |
| Dentists | Council registration | UMDPC competency assessment |
| Pharmacists | Registration after internship | Document evaluation |
| Physiotherapists | Registration by qualification | Evaluation |
For Ugandan students, the UNMEB examination is the qualifying step. It combines written papers with a practical component, and the Board sets it for diploma and certificate programmes. Passing it makes a student eligible for registration with the UNMC.
The UNMC's frequently asked questions explain the foreign-trained route. A nurse or midwife trained abroad applies to the Council, pays the listed USD 50 fee, and is interviewed by a committee. If the interview is passed, the Council requires a period of supervised attachment before registration. If your training was not in English, the Council asks for IELTS 6.0 or higher.
Because the interview tests clinical judgement through conversation, preparation looks different from MCQ study. Practise explaining your reasoning aloud, and know Ugandan common conditions such as malaria, HIV care, maternal and newborn emergencies and tuberculosis.

The Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) is reported to run pre-entry examinations for interns and a competency examination for foreign-trained doctors. Foreign-trained candidates are reported to fail at high rates. The format is described as multiple-choice questions plus a clinical component, but we could not confirm an official page, so check with the Council.
Foreign-trained dentists face a UMDPC competency assessment, again without a published format in our sources.
Ugandan pharmacists register after an internship; no licensing exam is listed. Internship arrangements were the subject of disputes in 2026, so confirm the current placement rules. Foreign-trained pharmacists go through document evaluation. We could not confirm the official page for the regulator, so ask the Pharmacy Board directly.
The Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) of Uganda registers physiotherapists by qualification. It runs assessments for some cadres, such as laboratory professionals, but none is listed for physiotherapy. Foreign-trained physiotherapists go through evaluation. Verify with the Council whether an assessment has been added.

English is the language of instruction and examination in Uganda. IELTS 6.0 or higher is the Council's condition for foreign-trained nurses educated in another language. Recognition runs through each council, and there is no single national verification body for health qualifications in the sources we reviewed.

Interviews reward a different kind of preparation from written tests. A committee of experienced clinicians will ask about your training, your experience and how you would handle realistic situations. You will be judged on the safety of your reasoning, not only on facts.
A figure like 53,000 candidates reflects the number of nursing and midwifery programmes and the size of the cohorts they graduate. For an individual student, scale matters in two ways: results can take time to release, and administrative errors are more likely, so keep your candidate number and records safe and follow up with your school if anything looks wrong.
Doctors and dentists should note that the council examinations for foreign-trained candidates have reportedly high failure rates. Treat them as full examinations: sit timed mocks, practise the clinical component, and ask the Council for the syllabus.
The UNMC route listed is a committee interview (USD 50 listed), followed by a supervised attachment, rather than a written examination.
IELTS 6.0 or higher is listed for foreign-trained nurses whose training was not in English.
The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board, which sets the final qualifying examinations for local nursing and midwifery students.
UMDPC is reported to run a pre-internship or pre-entry examination and a competency examination for foreign-trained doctors. Check the Council for the current scheme.
None is listed for either. Pharmacists register after internship and physiotherapists by qualification, with evaluation for foreign-trained applicants.
Press reports put it at around 53,000 candidates in a sitting of nurses and midwives examinations. Treat it as an approximate press figure.
