Is 60% Enough? Pass Marks, Scoring and Retakes Across the Gulf

What each Gulf regulator publishes about pass marks, how results are reported, and how many times you can sit, with the unpublished parts marked.

Updated October 2026. 7 min read

60% is the published pass mark for the DHA General Practice exam, the Qatar DHP GP exam, NHRA licensure exams and the MOHAP exam. On a 150-item paper that is 90 correct answers if every item is scored. The SMLE uses a scaled score with a pass mark of 560 on a 200-800 scale, which is not a percentage. DOH publishes no pass mark. DHA, DOH and MOHAP report Pass or Fail only, so a failed attempt gives you no domain breakdown. Attempt limits range from three in the UAE to a currently uncapped OMSB. Checked 21 October 2026.

What 60% means in practice

60% of 150 is 90. If every item counts, you can answer 60 wrong and pass. That sounds generous until you remember how the margin is used: the items you are unsure about are the ones that decide the paper, not the ones you know.

Correct out of 150PercentageAgainst a 60% mark
8053%10 items short
9060%At the mark
10067%10 items clear
11275%22 items clear

Two things the regulators do not say, and we will not guess. First, whether any items on the paper are unscored. If some are, 60% applies to the scored items. Second, whether there are domain minimums. None of the pass-mark statements we read sets one, and the Qatar blueprint lists item counts without a per-area pass mark. So the working assumption is a single overall mark, but confirm in the candidate guide for your booking.

The SMLE is different: a scaled score

SCFHS reports the SMLE on a 200-800 scale with 560 as the pass mark. A scaled score is built so that results from different test forms can be compared, which is why 560 is not 560/800 as a percentage and not 70%. We did not find a published conversion from the number of correct answers to the scaled score, so you cannot work out the raw pass mark from the scale. The consequence for preparation is practical: do not train to a percentage target for the SMLE. Train to the blueprint, aim for consistent strength in the mastery-level 3 topics, and use the feedback report if you need a second attempt.

The paper itself has 200 items in two blocks of 100, 120 minutes each with a 30-minute break. The blueprint allows up to 10% pilot questions, which is up to 20 of the 200 items, and the 2024 applicant guide also mentions up to 20 unscored. You cannot tell which items are unscored, so answer all of them seriously.

Pass or Fail only: how to know you are ready

Three regulators, DHA, DOH and MOHAP, report only Pass or Fail. A fail gives you no score, no domain breakdown and nothing to aim a retake at. That moves the diagnostic work onto you. This is our rule of thumb, not regulator data.

  • Target 70% or better, not 60%. In the last three weeks, aim for 70% or above across mixed, timed blocks of 50 on original questions. The gap between your practice score and the real mark is your margin against the unknowns above.
  • Track by domain. Keep a running percentage per domain. A paper does not set domain minimums that we know of, but a domain below 50% is a risk because the real paper is mixed and an unlucky draw hits it.
  • Log error type. Label each wrong answer as knowledge gap, misread stem or time pressure. The fix for each is different, and the last is the cheapest to remove.
  • Sit full-length mocks at the real pace. 72 seconds an item for a 150 in 180 paper.

Attempt limits and waiting rules

RegulatorLimit and waiting rule
DHAMaximum of 3 attempts. After a third failure DHA can bar reapplication for 2 years. DHA may reduce the allowance for some candidates.
DOHPrep sources quote 3 attempts across the UAE, a 3-month wait after a fail and 12 months after a third. The DOH page we reached does not state this, so confirm it.
MOHAPMaximum 3 attempts at MOHAP, no fourth. You may apply through DHA or DOH instead.
Qatar DHPFive consecutive attempts, whatever the gap between them.
OMSBNo maximum at present, per Pearson VUE. Retakes follow OMSB policy and each new booking is paid again.
NHRAFour consecutive attempts within three years of the first. After a fourth failure, at least 6 months of retraining. Then two more attempts within two years.
SCFHSUp to four attempts a year, one per testing window. After passing, two more attempts are allowed to improve the score.

Notice what the rules reward. In the UAE and Bahrain, the cost of a fail is high and the number of attempts is low, so a delayed first sitting is cheaper than a failed one. In Qatar and Oman the rules are looser, but fees and months still add up. Counting attempts across regulators matters in the UAE, where the sources describe a shared total, so ask the new regulator what it counts before you rebook elsewhere.

A worked example of margin and pace

Take a 150-item paper in 180 minutes with a 60% mark. Suppose that in a mixed, timed practice block you are certain of 85 items, split between the rest at roughly even odds on 40 items and no idea on 25. Certain items give you 85. Even-odds items give you about 20 more if your reasoning is sound, which reaches 105, or 70%. The 25 items you do not know add a few lucky guesses on four options. That is a comfortable pass on paper. Now change one thing: you spend 100 seconds on each of the first 60 items and have to rush the last 30. The rushed items fall from even odds to guesses, and the total drops by around 10. Pace turned a clear pass into a narrow one.

The point of the example is not the numbers, which are illustrative, but the structure. Your score is the sum of certain items, reasoned items and guesses, and time pressure moves items from the second group to the third. Training at pace is therefore as valuable as adding knowledge. A rule that works: first pass at 60 seconds an item, flag anything slower, and use the remaining time for flags.

Specialty physicians in Qatar

DHP sets 60% for the general practitioner exam and 65% for specialty physician scopes, per its exam page. If your offer is for a specialist role, you are not preparing for the GP paper. That matters for this site: our bank is built for the GP exam, so it is the right tool for GP and general medical officer posts, not for specialty scopes.

Result timing

Do not plan a start date from the day you sit. DHA posts Pass or Fail in Sheryan. The Prometric SCFHS page mentions 7 to 10 working days for some exams on its portal, and SCFHS says SMLE licensure results arrive 2 to 6 weeks after the window closes. OMSB candidates receive a Pearson VUE score report by email within 24 hours. Other regulators do not state a timeline in the sources we checked, and a prep-provider estimate for DHA CBT results is not a regulator figure. Licensing steps after the result are separate and are not timed in public.

A last note on margins: if your last three full mocks fall within five points of each other, you have a stable estimate. If they swing by fifteen, you do not yet, and the booking should wait.

Common misreadings

  • "60% on every section." We found no statement of section minimums. Do not invent one, and do not ignore a weak domain either.
  • "560 is 70%." It is a scaled score. No conversion is published.
  • "A fail shows what I missed." At DHA, DOH and MOHAP it does not. The SMLE feedback report is the only structured feedback among the regulators that report it.
  • "A pass here is a pass there." Passes are regulator-specific. See the comparison guide.
  • "My practice score is my exam score." Only if the practice items are of equal quality and you sit them under equal conditions.

For the pace targets and the time of each regulator's paper, see booking and fees and the study plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DHA pass mark for general practitioners?

60%. The DHA CBT guideline describes the General Practice exam, code GEN5331, as 150 MCQs in 3 hours including registration and introduction. DHA reports Pass or Fail only, with no score shown in Sheryan.

Is 560 on the SMLE the same as 70%?

No. The SMLE is reported on a scaled 200-800 range. A scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, and we found no published conversion, so train to the blueprint rather than to a percentage.

Does DOH publish a pass mark?

Not on the pages we checked. DOH reports Pass or Fail. Confirm any figure you are given against a DOH document.

Do I have to score 60% in every domain?

We found no statement of domain minimums in the pass-mark information we read. Plan for a single overall mark, but check the candidate guide for your booking.

How many times can I retake the exam?

It depends on the regulator: a maximum of three in the UAE, five consecutive attempts in Qatar, four within three years in Bahrain before retraining, four a year for the SMLE, and no maximum currently stated for OMSB.

How soon do I get my result?

DHA posts it to Sheryan. OMSB candidates get a Pearson VUE score report by email within 24 hours. The SMLE result comes 2 to 6 weeks after the testing window closes. Other timings are not stated in the sources we checked.

Are some questions unscored?

The SMLE blueprint allows up to 10% pilot questions, which is up to 20 of the 200 items, and the 2024 applicant guide also mentions up to 20 unscored. The other regulators do not state whether they use unscored items.

What practice score means I am ready?

There is no regulator answer. As a rule of thumb, consistent scores of 70% or above on mixed, timed blocks of original questions in your final three weeks leave a margin over a 60% mark.
