Oman's GP Exam: A Classification Test With an Open Question on Provider

Oman's GP exam classifies you as well as licensing you, and the public sources conflict on who delivers it. Here is what is confirmed and what to ask OMSB.

Updated October 2026. 7 min read

Oman's GP exam is an occupational classification exam run by the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB), and the public sources disagree on one basic point: whether it is delivered by Pearson VUE or Prometric. Pearson VUE's OMSB page states what you can rely on: no maximum number of attempts at present (retakes follow OMSB policy), a full refund for cancelling at least 48 hours ahead, free rescheduling at least 48 hours ahead, and a score report emailed within 24 hours. The format, pass mark and fee should be confirmed with OMSB. Checked 21 October 2026.

Classification, not only licensing

OMSB describes its tests as occupational classification (OC) exams. The idea differs from a pure licensing pass. The result helps place you at a grade, so the exam you sit has to match the post on your offer letter. OMSB lists a general practitioner OC exam and separate OC exams for specialties. Choose by the post, not by what you have heard others sit, and ask OMSB or your employer which exam your offer calls for.

This guide uses "OEGP", the label that prep providers use for the general practitioner OC exam. We could not confirm that label on an OMSB page, so use the exam name that appears in your OMSB account.

One third-party prep source lists the OEGP as 150 multiple-choice questions in 165 minutes with a 60% pass mark and a fee of about USD 220. We have not been able to confirm any of this on an OMSB page. Treat it as a planning guess at best, and do not quote it as OMSB's figure.

The provider question

Pearson VUE's OMSB page describes OMSB certification exams and says that retakes follow OMSB policy. Pearson VUE also issued a 2023 announcement of an exclusive OMSB partnership for the nursing occupational classification exam. The OMSB FAQ, by contrast, tells candidates to contact "the OMSB Prometric Manager" for queries about Prometric examinations. We cannot reconcile these from public material. One explanation might be that different exams use different providers, or that the FAQ is older, but that is speculation. The practical step is to ask OMSB, in writing, which provider delivers the doctor exam, and then read that provider's policies.

Do not pay for a booking until you know which provider owns it. The cancellation, refund and ID rules differ between providers, and the Pearson VUE terms above apply only if Pearson VUE delivers your exam.

Booking and policies, if Pearson VUE delivers

  1. Create the account on the Pearson VUE site, using the name on your ID.
  2. Schedule and pay. Every new booking requires a new payment.
  3. Check your email. Pearson VUE sends a confirmation within 48 hours.
  4. Arrive 30 minutes early. Candidates are asked to arrive 30 minutes before the appointment.
  5. Read the score report in your email within 24 hours. Pearson cannot reissue a lost report.

Pearson VUE does not provide study material or exam content information. It refers candidates to OMSB for that, and OMSB's OC page links content files for some exams. Ask OMSB for the content file for your exam. It is the closest thing to a blueprint you will get.

No cap on attempts: how to read it

Pearson VUE's wording is "There is currently no maximum number of exam attempts." Two words matter: "currently" and "OMSB policy". The rule can change, and OMSB can impose its own conditions on retakes. Do not build a strategy on unlimited attempts. Every attempt is a fee and a booking, and an employer waiting for your grade will not wait indefinitely. Prepare as if each attempt were your last, and treat the absence of a cap as a safety net, not a plan.

Verification at OMSB

DataFlow is OMSB's PSV partner. The OMSB FAQ says DataFlow is responsible for PSV only, that fees vary with the number of documents to be verified, and that the standard timeframe is 35 working days from payment. The FAQ file is undated, so treat the 35 working days as an historical marker and ask OMSB for the current figure. DataFlow's OMSB page adds that a report transfer between Gulf and international regulators can produce a new OMSB report within 5 days if no additional documents are needed. For exam questions, the FAQ gives the address cert.equ@omsb.org. See the DataFlow guide.

Choosing the right OC exam for your post

Because OMSB classifies by occupation, a wrong choice is a wasted fee and a result that does not help your application. Before you book, collect three pieces of information from your employer or OMSB: the exact job title on your offer, the grade or band that title is meant to hold, and the OC exam that OMSB assigns to that title. Keep the answer in writing. If you are moving from a general role to a specialty role, or the reverse, ask which exam covers the new post. A GP OC exam does not stand in for a specialty exam, and the reverse is also true.

What to ask OMSB in writing

  1. Which exam applies to my post? Quote the title on your offer letter.
  2. Which provider delivers it, and where? Ask for the booking link, not only a name.
  3. How many questions, how long and what pass mark? If OMSB publishes a content file, ask for the link.
  4. What is the fee, and who pays it? Ask when it is due and whether it is refundable.
  5. What is the current retake policy? Ask whether the "no maximum" position in the provider's policy still applies.
  6. How does the result map to grade? Ask whether a higher score changes anything.

Send the questions to the address in the OMSB FAQ for exam queries, and keep the reply with your records.

Why the gaps are a planning problem

Missing details compound each other. If you do not know the provider, you do not know the cancellation terms. If you do not know the question count, you do not know your pace. If you do not know the pass mark, you cannot compute a margin. The safest approach is conservative on all three: book late rather than early, train at a brisk pace, and aim for scores well above 60% in your mocks. A confirmed Pearson VUE policy is not a substitute for knowing your own exam's rules, so read the provider terms that apply to your booking.

If you already hold a Gulf licence

Holders of licences from other Gulf regulators should ask OMSB whether any arrangement reduces the exam burden. The public sources we reviewed state no such arrangement, and Oman's exam serves classification as well as licensing, so a licence elsewhere may not substitute for it. If you were verified by DataFlow for another regulator, the report transfer described above may shorten the verification step, though it does not change the exam. Ask, and do not assume.

A short checklist before you pay

  • Written confirmation of the exam title and provider.
  • The booking link from OMSB or the provider, not a link from a third party.
  • The cancellation terms that apply to that provider.
  • A date that leaves you time to prepare, and a spare date if you need to reschedule at least 48 hours ahead.

How to prepare under uncertainty

Because the format is unconfirmed, build flexibility into your preparation.

  • Pace. Train at 72 seconds an item. If the paper is as long as a prep source suggests, 165 minutes for 150 items is 66 seconds an item, so a 72-second habit would be slightly slow. Train at 60 to 65 seconds and you are safe in either case.
  • Content. Use the shared core and the content file from OMSB when you get it. Add the Gulf-specific items in high-yield topics.
  • Grade. Because the exam informs a grade, ask your employer whether a higher score changes your post or only your pass status. If it changes your post, allow more preparation time than a minimum pass would need.
  • Logistics. Confirm the centre and provider before you travel. Do not fly for an exam on an unconfirmed booking.

The comparison guide shows where OMSB sits against the others, and booking and fees gives the dated money figures, including the cancellation terms above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the OMSB exam for general practitioners?

OMSB runs occupational classification exams. There is a general practitioner OC exam, and its result informs your grade. Confirm the exact exam name for your post with OMSB.

Is the OMSB exam delivered by Pearson VUE or Prometric?

The public sources disagree. Pearson VUE's OMSB page and OMSB material point to Pearson VUE, while an OMSB FAQ refers to an OMSB Prometric manager. Ask OMSB which provider delivers your exam.

How many times can I retake it?

Pearson VUE says there is currently no maximum number of attempts, and retakes follow OMSB policy. Each new booking is paid again.

When do I get my result?

If Pearson VUE delivers it, the score report is emailed within 24 hours of the exam. Lost reports cannot be reissued, so contact OMSB.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

With Pearson VUE, cancelling at least 48 hours ahead gives a full refund, taking 10 to 14 business days, and rescheduling at least 48 hours ahead is free. With less notice you may forfeit the fee.

What is the OMSB pass mark and fee?

Neither is confirmed on the pages we checked. A third-party source lists 60% and about USD 220, but we have not verified either. Ask OMSB.

Who handles verification?

DataFlow handles primary source verification only. The OMSB FAQ gives a standard timeframe of 35 working days from payment, but the file is undated, so ask OMSB for the current figure.

Who do I contact about the exam?

The OMSB FAQ gives cert.equ@omsb.org for exam queries.
